“We should try to change the conversation, change the tone, from being about doom and gloom…to have a discussion about how we can do something about it,” said Kalcher.
“The more [financial services] institutions concentrate on this the better because they also need to play a role.”
Amazonia
Amazonia is a series of photographs that celebrate the indigenous peoples and varied landscapes of the Brazilian rainforest.
Salgado's Amazonia exhibition
The project developed over the space of seven years that Salgado spent working with indigenous communities and photographing the landscape that is vital to their survival.
The Amazon forest is approaching a crucial tipping point in the fight against climate change.
Salgado says: “The Amazon forest is the only place on earth where aerial humidity does not depends on evaporation of the oceans: rather, every tree operates like an aerator that projects hundreds of litres per day into the atmosphere.
“Satellite photographs invariably show the tropical rainforest to be largely hidden by clouds. The day when the jungle is perfectly visible from space will be the day that ‘flying rivers’ have disappeared, with catastrophic consequences for our planet.”
